Sterling VS Plated Silver

Learn the key differences between plated and sterling silver, and discover tips for distinguishing between them in your jewellery and flatware, ensuring you make informed decisions about your precious metal possessions.

Sterling VS Plated Silver

At Minty Gold & Silver Exchange, we frequently get questions about the difference between plated and sterling silver. To put it simply, plated silver is made by coating a base metal with a thin layer of silver. While it may look like silver, the layer is not made of pure silver, which can result in discolouration over time. Sterling silver, on the other hand, is made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other metals, typically copper. This mixture creates a durable material that is resistant to tarnishing and scratches.

Have you ever wondered how to spot the difference between sterling and plated silver when it comes to your jewellery and flatware?

Check out the tips below for ways you can spot the difference:

  • Look for Hallmarks

Sterling silver usually bears specific hallmarks or stamps that indicate its purity. The most common hallmark for sterling silver is "925" or "Sterling," which means it contains 92.5% pure silver. Plated silver, on the other hand, may have different markings such as "EPNS" (Electroplated Nickel Silver) or "EP" (Electroplated).

  • Inspect for Wear or Damaage

Over time, plated silver tends to wear down, revealing the base metal underneath. Look for areas where the silver plating has rubbed off, showing a different color or metal beneath. Sterling silver, although it may tarnish, will not have a different metal showing through.

  • Check for Signs of Bubbling or Flaking

Plated silver can develop bubbles or flaking on the surface as the plating deteriorates. Examine the item closely for any irregularities or inconsistencies in the silver coating.

  • Test with a Magnet

Most plated silver is applied over a base metal that may be magnetic, such as brass or nickel. Use a small magnet to see if the item is attracted to it. Sterling silver is non-magnetic, so if the item is attracted to the magnet, it is likely plated.
