How to spot sterling
Sterling silver is usually stamped 925 or Sterling. It’s 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.
We buy sterling silver, but not silver-plated items. Silver isn’t magnetic, so a magnet can help you spot some plated pieces. MINTY buys the silver value only, and gemstones are returned to you if you’d like to keep them.

Do you buy silver-plated items?
No. We buy sterling silver, but we don’t buy silver-plated items. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper; silver plate is a thin coating of silver over brass, copper or lead. Silver-plated items can be recycled at AIM.
Can I use a magnet to test my jewellery?
Gold, silver and platinum aren’t magnetic. Many plated pieces have a nickel or iron core, which is magnetic, so a magnet can help you spot them. Some have a brass core, which isn’t magnetic, so a magnet won’t catch everything.
Do you buy broken silver jewellery?
Yes. We buy broken, unworn and orphaned gold and silver jewellery, including earrings that are missing their pair.
What happens to my gemstones?
MINTY buys the gold and silver value only. We return gemstones to you if you’d like to keep them, or we can talk through a few other options that suit you best.
How do I get paid?
If you choose to sell, you’re paid on the spot by cheque or e-transfer. The choice is always yours.
Do I need ID?
Yes. By law, you must be at least 18 years old and show a valid form of identification to sell.
